We will focus on one of the main barriers impacting individuals with ASD, communication. Together we’ll journey within to explore our own preferred communication style and examine how this influences our interactions. Know Your Value and How to Communicate it with Kyira Wackett, MS, LPC Supplementary Materials
Assertive communication is one of the top tools necessary to continue to advance in your career. And, it is also one of the biggest struggles we face professionally. Implicit biases, stereotypes and cultural expectations have forced many of us into roles of passive and avoidant communication styles, especially those of us who identify as womxn, BIPOC, and/or gender non-binary. This is increasingly more present as we look to the impact of our intersecting identities including body size and age.
Becoming a more assertive communicator in the workplace will allow you to be direct and reflect confidence, set boundaries and show a willingness to grow. Not to mention, these moments impact salary negotiations and promotion opportunities. In this session, we will focus specifically on the ways to use assertive communication in both giving and receiving feedback, setting boundaries and in asking and advocating for the opportunities that will help you move forward in your career.
Ask questions and learn about what it's like to be on the OWHE Board and which positions are open for the upcoming election. After this informal virtual coffee chat, you will feel prepared to apply to be one of our awesome new Board members!
Liberatory Relationships with OWHE 2020 Conference Keynote Kim McAloney (She/Her/Hers) and Jenesis Long (She/Her/Hers)
This informative session discusses a newly developed theoretical model of women of color mentorship within higher education examining ways of sustenance, deep productivity, and sites of resilience. Using the model, we will provide participants with insight into literature and research about radical transformation of relationships across positional divisions that liberate from White supremacist ways of being in higher education. Read more about this model in their previous OWHE blog post.

Learn how our perceptions of busyness and rest are tied into capitalism and white supremacy. Re-frame the importance of rest and learn some tools for incorporating and prioritizing rest and intentional care in your life. This webinar will engage with resources from the Nap Ministry as well as frameworks of liberatory care.
Getting Unstuck: Uncover and Overcome Barriers to Change with Heather Roberts (She/Her/Hers)
This webinar explores why change is difficult and exposes participants to a systematic approach to implementing desired changes in their lives. It is meant to address the situations where someone knows what they want to do, yet are not doing it. Based on Dr. Sasha Heinz's work, we will dig into what really holds us back, which might be a false limiting belief operating outside of conscious awareness. Participants will gain an understanding of how intersectional identities can result in different beliefs and how to override beliefs resulting from internalized oppression to achieve their desired outcomes. Update from Heather: The world feels very different since I originally presented on this topic of how to overcome barriers to change at the OWHE conference in January. I’ve updated the material to incorporate what I’ve learned and the relevance of this topic to living in a time of heightened fear and uncertainty. For a variety of reasons, when we’re experiencing a lot of stress, we’re more likely to revert to old patterns of thinking and behaving even if we know that those patterns are detracting from our health, happiness and/or goals in life. Understanding how to get unstuck and move towards what we want becomes even more critical in these times.
How do Non-Binary People fit within a Womxn's Organization? with Cath Busha (They/Them/Theirs)
OWHE's mission is to "facilitate meaningful connection, personal growth, professional advancement, and systemic change for all Oregon women in higher education." How does OWHE maintain its vital focus while expanding to include people who identify as Non-Binary? This session will cover Non-Binary 101; then, we will provide a facilitated space for conversation on how OWHE and other gender-based groups can ensure inclusion of Non-Binary people.
Preparing an OWHE Virtual Conference Proposal with Sara Spiers (she/her), Emma Larkins (she/her), and Shannon Shivers (she/her)
Contemplating submitting a proposal for the 2021 Virtual OWHE Conference? Whether you are applying for the first time or 100th time, we encourage all individuals interested in submitting a proposal to attend this webinar. The 2021 Conference, like many things this year, will look a little different. For starters, the entire conference is virtual and spread over a week! We hope this provides space for more presentations, more networking, and more community building.
Education committee members, Sara Spiers (she/her), Emma Larkins (she/her), and Shannon Shivers (she/hers), have experience on both sides of this process and want you to feel confident in your proposal. During the webinar, we will provide an overview of the virtual conference format and how your proposals fit within that vision. Next, we will share potential presentation ideas based on OWHE member feedback from the 2020 Conference. Finally, the presenters will review the proposal process. Presenters are also allotting time to brainstorm additional topic ideas and various ways to have the presentation style align with the presentation topic and objectives. Please join us to learn more about what the 2021Conference has in store! We hope to see you at the webinar!
