Gender and Justice: Learning from Indigenous Resistance

From early resistance to settler colonialism to the ways in which federal policy impact the murdered & missing Indigenous women/people movement, Indigenous people have found ways to work towards gender justice. In this session, Dr. Whitebear will discuss the ways in which Indigenous people have exemplified gender justice as well as what we all can learn from this intergenerational body of resistance.

Women's Friendships as Places of Resistance in The Academy

In this session, facilitators Emma-Bjorngard-Basayne and Kristi Kaeppel will share their research on how workplace friendships can buffer women against the effects of marginalization in academic settings, and in some cases, lead them to thrive. They'll discuss the origin of their research in their own friendship and (anonymously) share participants' stories as a way to showcase the transformative potential of women's allyship and camaraderie in the workplace. Together, we'll identify practical ideas to cultivate and harness relational power and discuss remaining challenges to gender equity and inclusivity in the academic workplace.

Intentionally Genderful: How Understanding Gender Diversity Can Set Us Free

Regardless of how much we know about gender identity or expression, this training will offer a refresher on the basics (how many genders are there anyway?) along with an introduction to the front-line battles we're facing about gender today. The main topics of this training will include: (1) how we're raised to think about gender and why, (2) how our gender identities are impacted by our backgrounds and experiences, (3) how gender subtly and violently influences the way we find safety, and (4) how we can fight for safer and more inclusive workplaces, programs and policies, and much more.

February 9th, 2 pm-3 pm

We acknowledge that the experiences of gender minorities, BIPOC, people from LGBTQIA2S+ communities and people with disabilities have been historically excluded from organizational leadership and professional development opportunities. We encourage people of all gender communities with intersecting identities to participate as we value the perspectives they bring to our learning community. This programming is curated for staff, students (undergraduate and graduate), facilitators, professionals in the field of higher education, non profit/community organizations and equity related work.

Gender Advocacy & Inclusion Network in Higher Education invites you to become radically inclusive with us by engaging with learning opportunities throughout the year.
